What is Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy?
Sometimes children and young people experience powerful emotions that they struggle to understand. These feelings may be expressed through the disruptive and sometimes disturbing behaviour. This could cause upset to them and the people around them. This often has negative impact on their learning and development. It affects their general well-being and negatively influences their relationships with peers and family members.
A Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist is a professional who works with Children, Young People and Families. A Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist is skilled in understanding what children and young people are communicating through their behaviour and the play. A Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist does this by listening and observing their behaviour and play. A Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist can help children and young people make sense of their feelings and express them with words. This could reduce their need to act out the feelings, become distressed and engage in disruptive behaviour.
How Psychotherapy Helps?
Psychotherapy helps by allowing children, young people to express their worrying thoughts and feelings.
Building a relationship with the therapist helps the child or young person to start expressing their worries and other feelings and thoughts. This may happen via play or words. The psychotherapist helps the child or young person to understand and process some of the feelings and thoughts that feel overwhelming and complicated. This reduces the need to act these feelings out by behaviour and it improves relationships with others. It also frees up space in the child or young person’s mind and thus facilitates better learning and achievement in an education setting.
Psychotherapy helps a person not only to understand their feelings but also supports them to develop skills to manage new challenges, both in the present and in the future.
A Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist often works with the whole family and provides guidance to parents. They support them in understanding and managing their child's difficulties.
What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?
The titles psychotherapist and counsellor are often used interchangeably. Both, psychotherapist and counsellor, refer to a professional who specialises in talking therapies. The aim of both, psychotherapists and counsellors, is to provide support with a range of concerns affecting individual's well-being. Sometimes a counsellor works in less depth and within a shorter timeframe than a psychotherapist. I, as a psychotherapist, work both within a short timeframe for less in depth work and a longer term, for a more in-depth approach. This depends on the individual needs of the child, adolescent and family.
I offer psychotherapy and counselling with children, young people and families in Bloomsbury, Central London and Primrose Hill, North London.
