Working with Parents
When a child or young person is experiencing difficulties, this also affects the whole family. At times, parents' own difficulties may interfere with their ability to parent and support the child. Sometimes difficulties in family relationships may be expressed by a child in the family.
A psychotherapist supports parents by helping them to understand their child’s behaviour and emotional needs. This kind of support can be explored in different ways. Sometimes one or both parents can be seen separately from the child. Other times, a combination of parent and child sessions may be helpful. Parent work explores different parenting approaches and improves family relationships.
